Luckily, Kentucky Genealogical Society is offering a five part class aptly titled, “Becoming a Genealogist and Family Historian,” and one of the best parts is that it’s FREE! PART 1 – Introduction: If you’re a new researcher, the process of uncovering your family’s story probably feels a little daunting. The good news is that you’re not alone, and this video is sure to help! With a list of commonly used abbreviations and symbols–as well as examples of records–this first lesson will get you on the right researching track.
PART 2 – Foundation for Becoming a Genealogist: Becoming a great family historian and genealogist doesn’t happen overnight. Instead, it takes a strong foundation to become someone who can accurately locate and interpret historical records. With information about how to locate records–which is, clearly, a crucial part of being a genealogist–this presentation will lay a foundation of information that you can build on!
PART 3 – Online Research: While heading to a physical archive is important, it’s pretty hard to deny how incredible genealogical websites can be, too! If the countless online genealogy programs leave you feeling uncertain and overwhelmed, this presentation will give you clarity that should help you maximize your search.
PART 4 – Additional Online Research Techniques: When it comes to family research, there’s just a lot to cover. Thankfully, this presentation covers some additional online research techniques–even how DNA testing works!
PART 5 – Chronicling Your Family Story: Woo-hoo–you made it to part five of Kentucky Genealogical Society’s free online classes! Of course, you may very well be thinking: “This information is great…but now what?” After you’ve gathered information, the next key step is to share your family’s story, and this presentation provides details on how to successfully do just that.
