Create a Genealogy Oasis This Summer!

As soon as the thermometer reaches 60 degrees, I’m outside from the moment I wake up until the sun dips behind the ridge on my family’s farm for the day. For me, there’s just nothing quite like breathing in the fresh air and soaking up the sounds of summer–frogs, crickets, birds–every day. While I enjoy my daily outside-time, that doesn’t mean that I have time for non-stop relaxation. Between school, work, and history/genealogy projects, I almost always lug my laptop or tablet outside with me to reach my goals for the day.

This summer, I decided to add to my outdoor oasis, and I’ve now created a summer getaway that’s functional enough for me to work in and relaxing enough for me to enjoy once the clock strikes five. So if you’re ready to elevate your outdoor space, too, keep reading!

For years, I’ve wanted to add an egg chair to my outdoor space. Besides being comfy, I’ve always thought they boast a unique, aesthetically-pleasing look to them, too. At first, I envisioned a stationary egg chair–that is, until I spotted the hanging egg chair! After reading some reviews online, I decided to purchase a Mainstays double hanging egg chair, which is priced the same (when it’s on sale) or just a little more than the single hanging egg chair. This two-seater swing/egg chair combo is perfect for my needs because it gives me enough space to recline back and tuck a book beside me on the seat, too.

With my dad’s help, the egg chair was easy enough to assemble, and our tag-team effort to remove the swing from its box and install it took a little under an hour. To maximize the swing’s comfort, I decided to add a few outdoor pillows into the mix, too. The pineapple and palm tree pillow (both of which I snagged on sale from JcPenney) are no longer offered online. When it comes to outdoor pillows, though, there are so many adorable options online and in store, including from shops like Hobby Lobby (where my flamingo pillow came from).

Note: While I love my hanging egg chair, it is farther off of the ground and rocks back and forth slightly. Thus, those with limited mobility may not find this chair to be user-friendly. If that’s the case, a stationary, non-hanging egg chair can give you a similar look!

When it comes to researching outside, I always need a space to keep my laptop, books, and any other supplies I need. That’s where my Sundown Treasure outdoor end table comes in! This table was crafted with MEGA-TUFF® high-density polyethylene materials, which lets me enjoy the look of wood, but with added weather-resistance (and no splinters). There are several color options, but I chose the turquoise because it matches my space well. The table top isn’t overly large, but it still gives me enough room to store away my laptop or a book and iced tea (you know, the summer must-haves!).

No matter whether you’re like me and enjoy sitting outside from dawn (okay, 9:00 a.m.) to dusk or you’ve been looking for a way to dress up your patio, I think it’s hard to go wrong with an egg chair and functional table! While I can’t say that you’ll be able to locate that long-missing piece of your family’s puzzle by creating an outdoor researching oasis, I can say that I’ve already logged several genealogy hours in my chair. And since summer 2025 is just beginning, I know I’ll log lots more hours over these coming months.

Happy Researching!
