ENROLLMENT
OF PERSONS WHO SERVED IN THE ARMIES OF THE UNITED STATES
1890.
From original documents stored at Willard Library, Evansville, Indiana
Abstracted and indexed by Peggy K. Newton
On 13 April 1885 the General Assembly for the State of Indiana passed a bill tasking the township assessor to essentially take a census (although it wasn’t called that) of veterans of the United States armed services, going back to the War of 1812 and including the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the wars with Native American tribes. A full explanation of the process is at the beginning of the Abstract of the Enrollment, of which the link can be found at the bottom of this page or where indicated.
The original papers from which the abstract was taken are more than 125 years old and are in fragile condition. During most of the ensuing century they were folded inside packet envelopes and stored vertically. Eventually they became part of the archives of Willard Library and were unfolded and filed inside filing folders, and they remain at Willard today.
An earlier enrollment was taken in 1886 but has not been abstracted. Those papers are also in the Willard Library archives.
The names of the volunteers are listed below, generally in alphabetical order. They do not individually link to the abstract. The abstract is accessible by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page.
Because of the age of the papers–tearing at the folds, flaking at the edge, faded ink–and sometimes hard-to-read handwriting, some of the names may appear to be misspelled, and they likely are. Rather than guessing at the spelling of the names, the abstractor chose to write the names as they appeared.
Preceding the names are the numbered items that were asked by the township assessor (or representative acting on behalf of the assessor). In most cases, not all items had answers.
